The Hoyas seem to be in a better situation than a year ago. Friday they'll open the NCAA tournament at Wells Fargo Center as a No. 2 seed against No. 15 seed Florida Gulf Coast with memories of last year's upset fresh in their minds.

Whittington ranks second on the team in points (12.1) and rebounds (7.0) per game.

Greg Whittington scored a career-high 25 points, and No. 15 Georgetown beat Western Carolina 81-68 Saturday in a game played as executives discussed the future of the Hoyas and the Big East conference.

The Redskins are awful, and the Capitals are disappointing. The Nationals could be a year away; Mark Turgeon's Terrapins might be two. And the Wizards will be 0-7 unless they somehow manage to upset the New York Knicks on Friday at Verizon Center.

Saturday was tough for Georgetown's basketball program as news spread about Jeff Green, the former Hoya and current Boston Celtic who will undergo heart surgery next month and miss the NBA season. Georgetown coach John Thompson III spoke with Green over the weekend and was impressed with his response to the discovery of an aortic aneurysm.
"I think that we got a group of guys that really understand each other, on and off the court," sophomore guard Jabril Trawick said. "We're a very confident team. We think we can beat any team in the country, and we're ready to play whoever. I think that's the difference."
"When you look at every year, you think that this is the year," Trawick said. "I love this team. We've got a lot of great dudes on this team. I think everyone is for each other on this team and that's why we've been able to have the success we've had so far."
