How the government's punishing of the exposure of official wrongdoing can linger for years

A Florida detective is trying to prove that the two men convicted and executed for the 1959 Kansas killings that became the basis for Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" are also responsible for a pair of slayings in Florida during that same period.
"It's like putting together a jigsaw puzzle," said Sarasota County Sheriff's Detective Kimberly McGath, who began in 2007 to again investigate the murders of Cliff and Christine Walker and their two young children.
Ms. McGath said there's evidence that extends beyond the duo's road trip.
