This was just FGCU's sixth Division I season and second in which it was eligible to play in the postseason. What made Friday night's victory over second-seeded Georgetown even more special for the 15th-seeded Eagles was history, or the absence of it.

Gary Williams has made himself scarce around the Maryland Terrapins men's basketball program, which he ran for the prior 22 seasons. He's been busy completing various tasks for the athletic department (for which he's paid a tidy $400,000), working as an analyst for the Big Ten network and, just recently, making weekly local radio appearances on ESPN 980.

"It's a cautionary tale," he said. "But the need for again, focusing on the true mission of the university, is to graduate players and you can't fail at the most important task whether you're national champions or not."
Len Elmore, a member of the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics, called UConn's situation unfortunate, but said he was not surprised.
