Ken Zacher was a white 31-year-old high school basketball coach from an almost all-white town in rural Oklahoma, and there he stood on a stage before thousands at the 1972 national NAACP convention in Detroit.
"But I'm not sure we did," she said, only to pause again.
"Yes," she said, "we did ... but it was so hard for so many people."
