The past two weeks have offered Mitt Romney numerous opportunities to clarify his stance on immigration — and every time the presumptive Republican presidential nominee has taken a pass.

The meek may indeed inherit the earth, but the Republican presidential nominee won't inherit the White House in 2012 if he or she heeds the weak-kneed advice of at least one GOP consultant in what is becoming a deja vu of 2008.

Newt Gingrich has made a point of ridiculing the press during his presidential campaign, but he actually owes the media a debt of gratitude. Without the free coverage he has received, the money-challenged Gingrich campaign might never have gotten off the ground.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, the longest serving chief executive in the state's history and a politician who has never lost an election, said Friday he will consider seeking the Republican nomination for president.

"At the end of the day, no matter how any of the [states] respond, people are left with two distinct messages: That guy down in Texas has got big brass balls, and he's creating a lot of jobs," Mark McKinnon, a political strategist, told Politico. "It's brilliant marketing and very smart politics. Of course, it breaks all the rules of interstate diplomacy and protocol."

"In order to solve our country's big problems, we need real leadership in Washington to forge across-the-aisle solutions," said Mark McKinnon, the group's president, who adds that the pair will expound on "leadership."
