A white former transit officer in the San Francisco Bay area convicted in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man that has drawn continuing protest was released from jail early Monday after serving one year of a two-year sentence, officials said.
Mr. Mehserle's lawyer, Michael Rains, said Mr. Mehserle meant to use his Taser, not his pistol.
Mehserle was only able to get out of his cell once a week and took showers twice a week while at a downtown Los Angeles jail, Rains said.
