News from Twitter, Facebook and live television is often not much more reliable than news from the gossips and the town crier. We didn't learn our lesson from the pursuit of "white men driving white vans" during the Beltway sniper terror a decade ago, or the "multiple shooters" with AR-15 rifles said to be terrorizing the Washington Navy Yard last month. Rumors, tales and frantic gossip flew again during the Capitol lockdown Thursday.
I am a member of the mainstream media, but I'm also pro-Second Amendment. There are few in the journalism profession who share my beliefs. The public, therefore, gets a heavily biased view of firearm ownership and gun violence in America.
The biggest fight in history over Americans' right to keep and bear arms is being waged today. There were attacks on the Second Amendment in the early 1990s with the passage of the Brady bill and the "assault weapons" ban. The gun-control battle of 2013, however, could easily see the greatest losses of Second Amendment rights ever.
New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has spent tens of millions of his billions trying to get his gun bans instituted in the rest of America, even though these laws have never stopped criminals from getting guns.
Only in Mike Bloomberg’s Manhattan. Craving a Big Gulp? Better have a good lawyer. Want to do something special for your face? Treat it to a bird poo poultice at a luxury spa.
Michael Bloomberg obviously knows a lot about making money, even about the politics of Manhattan, where his money speaks in the loud and unctuous voice liberals love. But he doesn't know diddly about life where the rest of us live it.
Gun owners who cheered when the Senate failed to pass numerous anti-gun bills last week should temper their enthusiasm. The liberal wing of the Democratic party, led by President Obama and funded by New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, has already started to use the votes to oust pro-Second Amendment senators in 2014.
The background checks “compromise” in the Senate will not reduce crime or prevent mass shootings, but merely appeases President Obama while abridging Second Amendment rights. In advance of the expected Wednesday afternoon vote, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has been scrambling to find 60 votes for expanding background checks beyond federally-licensed dealers.
Despite President Obama’s best efforts to exploit the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School for his political agenda, the public is starting to see through his maneuver. Polls show that the support for Mr. Obama’s gun-control wishlist is falling. Even so, the polls continue to be skewed in a way that gives the false impression of a higher approval than really exists.
