A leading South Korean official backtracked Monday from claims he made about North Korea prepping for an underground nuclear missile test.

North Korea's military warned Monday that troops have aimed artillery at the specific coordinates of South Korean media groups as Pyongyang threatened a "merciless sacred war" over perceived insults.

North Korea on Thursday demanded several tough preconditions for resuming talks with rival South Korea, as it backed away from earlier vows to shun Seoul's conservative leader in what could be a sign of conciliation.

North Korea threatened Thursday to release conversations recorded during secret inter-Korean talks last month that it says show Seoul negotiators begging for high-level summits and offering bribes.

South Korea said Thursday it accepted a North Korean proposal to hold high-level defense talks a day after the leaders of the U.S. and China called for better communication between the two Koreas.
The number of North Koreans defecting to South Korea has surged in recent years because of economic suffering in the North, with more than 10,000 defections over the past three years, South Korea's government said Monday.
