    Syrian opposition groups unite against Assad

    Syria's two largest opposition groups signed an agreement on setting up a democracy after President Bashar Assad's regime falls, opposition figures said Saturday.

    Arab League unlikely to suspend Syria

    The Arab League debated for hours Sunday on whether to suspend Syria's membership over the bloody crackdown on anti-regime protesters, but deep divisions among the 22 nations suggested the proposal will not pass.

    Syria warns countries not to recognize opposition

    Syria's foreign minister warned the international community on Sunday not to recognize a new umbrella council formed by the opposition, threatening "tough measures" against any country that does so.

    Syrian dissidents meeting in Turkey formally announced Sunday the creation of a broad-based council designed to overthrow President Bashar Assad's regime in what appeared to be the most serious step yet to unify a fragmented opposition.
