Though the federal government is facing a massive shortfall over the coming decades ("$30 trillion in red ink," Comment & Analysis, June 10), there were real savings proposed in the past Congress that could offer solutions to both our short- and long-term fiscal problems.
If all on President Obama's wish list of policy reforms put forth at Tuesday's State of the Union were to come true, the total cost to taxpayers, according to one fiscal watchdog group, would exceed $83 billion.
It's a pricey policy landscape. According to National Taxpayers Union Foundation's line-by-line analysis of President Obama's most expensive State of the Union address yet: his 40 proposals weighed in at $83.4 billion worth of quantifiable agenda items. But wait. That could balloon to $100.4 billion, depending on how Mr. Obama deals with the looming sequester March 1.
Never home? President Obama has now spent more days out of the country than any other U.S. chief executive during his first two years in office: Fifteen trips to 26 countries, more than 55 travel days. Some hefty gas money, too: Air Force One costs about $181,757 per hour to operate, according to military sources.
