In a First Day Hike last Jan. 1, park ranger Bob Flippen leads hikers at Virginia’s High Bridge Trail State Park. About 400 such outings took place in all 50 states. More than 600 are planned for this New Year’s Day. (Associated Press)

Dick Clark, who did the first “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” special on ABC in 1972, died at age 82 in April. Fergie and Jenny McCarthy will be hosts of a two-hour tribute to Clark that will air on New Year’s Eve. (Associated Press)
