
On Thursday, 43-year-old BASE jump and sky-dive veteran Miles Daisher hurled himself from the rafters of the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, with only 230 feet between him and the polished floor. It only took 13 seconds, but the 19-story fall was enough time to experience just about every emotion — and to briefly reassess his career.

There's the romantic comedy where beautiful people flit from strength to strength on gossamer wings, and then there's the kind where characters sweat and struggle for whatever happy endings they manage to churn up. Michael Frayn is a very funny writer. I remember almost literally falling off my chair with laughter when I saw "Noises Off " in London years ago, and his farceur's wizardry with plotting has not abandoned him. Time was, however, when plot meant something with a beginning, a middle and an end, but Mr. Frayn now appears to be adopting Ezra Pound's modernist modification of Aristotle's rule to "beginning, whoop, and then any kind of a tail-off."
