    Oakland Athletics pitcher Brandon McCarthy was in stable condition in the critical care unit of a Bay Area hospital on Thursday, a day after having surgery for a skull fracture and brain contusion caused by a line drive.

    Nationals acquire catcher Kurt Suzuki from Athletics

    The Washington Nationals bolstered their inexperienced catching corps Friday afternoon, trading for Oakland Athletics catcher Kurt Suzuki in exchange for Single-A catcher David Freitas. Suzuki is expected to become the team's everyday catcher.
