Castro hit shots to tap-in range on the famed 17th and 18th holes on his way to a 9-under 63. That tied the course record held by Greg Norman and Fred Couples, and gave him a three-shot lead over Rory McIlroy.
Phil Mickelson opened his season with an erratic even-par 72 on Thursday in the Humana Challenge, leaving him nine strokes behind the first-round leaders.
"I wouldn't have been embarrassed or felt bad or anything if I would have shot two 76s this week," Castro said.
"It was huge," he said. "I was 6-over par and sitting there looking at 16, 17 and 18. I saw (Thursday) every hole on the course is hard, so it was nice to finish with six really solid holes."
