Washington-based election monitors denounced Egypt's military government for storming their offices in Cairo on Thursday, five days before the final vote for a new parliament.

Egypt has recaptured the "vast majority" of the thousands of prisoners who escaped or were set free during its revolution earlier this year, the country's ambassador to the U.S. told The Washington Times.

Egypt's military rulers called for an end to strikes and protests Monday as thousands of state employees, from ambulance drivers to police and transport workers, demonstrated to demand better pay in a growing wave of labor unrest unleashed by the democracy uprising that ousted President Hosni Mubarak.
