    Stocks gain as Europe moves closer to budget pact

    A deal to forge stronger ties between most of Europe's economies sent stocks sharply higher Friday afternoon as hopes grew that the region is close to resolving its debt crisis. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 215 points.

    Bank of America to cut 3,500 jobs

    Bank of America Corp., the nation's largest bank, said Friday that it plans to cut 3,500 jobs by the end of September.

    Republican Scott Brown owes his election in part to the public furor over the so-called "Cornhusker Kickback," the backroom deal that Sen. Ben Nelson, Nebraska Democrat, struck for his vote to pass the health care bill.
