Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and tea-party favorite Ted Cruz are heading to a July 31 runoff in the state's Republican Senate primary, the Associated Press declared late Tuesday.

ESPN college football analyst Craig James, who starred as a tailback at Southern Methodist University and with the New England Patriots in the 1980s, announced Monday he was running for the U.S. Senate as a Republican from Texas, a GOP fundraiser said.

Thanks in part to a $1.6 million personal loan to his own campaign, former Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert and his $2.6 million war chest have the early fundraising lead in a crowded field of Republicans looking to succeed Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison in 2012.
A new poll finds there are two tiers among the list of Texas Republicans scrambling to replace retiring Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison: There's Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst. Then there's everybody else.
