People critical of the NAACP's decision to honor Kid Rock at its annual Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner burned a Confederate flag Sunday afternoon in front of the event's downtown Detroit venue.

Kid Rock is known as a champion for Detroit _ proudly displaying the Motor City in music videos, jumping in when an area summer festival fell on hard times and using money from his "Made in Detroit" clothing line to help start a college fund for local music students.
Detroit NAACP President Wendell Anthony said Mr. Ritchie was being honored for his advocacy of the city.
"We're not lifting up the flag," Mr. Anthony said earlier Sunday. "We're lifting up a gentleman who has worked very hard to be a booster for Detroit."
