'Your papers, please' must never be heard in America

The Virginia Tech campus was brought to a panicked standstill Thursday as police investigated a report that a possible gunman had been spotted walking across school grounds.
ROANOKE — Two days before a gunman killed 30 persons and himself in a Virginia Tech classroom building, a suspicious male was noticed in the building and at least one of the exterior doors was found to be chained shut, police said yesterday.

Chief Flinchum told Mr. Steger that investigators at the scene of the first shootings believed that the two were gunned down by a jealous lover and that the gunman, who remained at large, was not a threat to the wider campus.
"While we may never fully understand why this happened, all the men and women you see here in uniform will continue to serve, continue to sacrifice," Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell Flinchum said. "For us, it is who we are, it is what we do. It is what Deriek did."
