How the government's punishing of the exposure of official wrongdoing can linger for years

Former Sen. Scott P. Brown's decision not to seek the Senate seat vacated by Democrat John F. Kerry has sent the Massachusetts GOP back to its wish list of candidates — a list that, for some, includes Ann Romney and Taggart "Tagg" Romney, the wife and oldest son of Mitt Romney, last year's GOP presidential nominee.

Former Sen. Scott Brown announced Friday that he is passing on the chance to run for in the special election to fill Democrat John Kerry's seat.

John Silber, the sharp-tongued, pugnacious public intellectual who transformed Boston University during a quarter-century as president and mounted an unsuccessful run for governor of Massachusetts, died Thursday. He was 86.

Former Massachusetts Gov. William F. Weld will be paid more than $20,000 in legal fees working for bankrupt Solyndra LLC — mostly in connection with congressional hearings during which company executives refused to answer questions.

Solyndra was OK'd to auction off assets and retain legal services for government probes.

U.S. taxpayers risk losing more than a half-billion dollars from the collapse of solar-panel maker Solyndra Inc., but former Massachusetts Gov. William F. Weld and his associates stand to earn a windfall in fees representing the bankrupt company in coming months.
"These rates are set at a level designed to fairly compensate the firm for the work of its attorneys and paralegals and to cover fixed and routine overhead expenses," he wrote.
