Libyan rebels closed in on Col. Moammar Gadhafi's tribal stronghold Sirte on Monday, but despite significant gains over the past few days, they predicted a bloody battle lies ahead.

Underneath headlines about Libya, the Japanese disaster and the Republicans' dainty attempts to nip around the edges of our massive federal debt, the culture war is raging.

U.S.-led military forces knocked out much of Libya's air defenses over the weekend with scores of Tomahawk cruise missiles and aerial bombs in the first phase of creating a U.N.-mandated no fly-zone, as differences emerged over targeting Libya's leader, Col. Moammar Gadhafi.
"We believe the regime is preparing to dig in at Sirte, setting up a number of checkpoints and placing tanks throughout the city," said Vice Adm. William Gortney, staff director for the Joint Chiefs.
