Brief slip puts Barack Obama in tough spot

By Christina Bellantoni on Sept. 7, 2008 into Bellantoni

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — In a testament to the lightning speed of the false viral email rumors about Sen. Barack Obama's faith, a brief misstatement on a Sunday talk show already has caught fire on the Internet.

Obama is a practicing Christian, despite numerous attempts by his foes to suggest otherwise.

In an interview broadcast on ABC's "This Week," the Democratic nominee accidentally used the word "my" when talking about the smears.

I have a story up now:

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Sen. Barack Obama's foes seized Sunday upon a brief slip of the tongue, when the Democratic presidential nominee was outlining his Christianity but accidentally said, "my Muslim faith."

The three words -- immediately corrected -- were during an exchange with ABC's George Stephanopoulos on "This Week," when he was trying to criticize the quiet smear campaign suggesting he is a Muslim.

But illustrating the difficulty of preventing false rumors about his faith from spreading, anti-Obama groups within one hour of the interview had sliced it out of context and were sending it around via email. They also were blogging about it.

Mr. Obama, who is a Christian and often proudly speaks about how his faith has influenced his public service, said he finds it "deeply offensive" that there are efforts "coming out of the Republican camp to suggest that perhaps I'm not who I say I am when it comes to my faith."

I've written quite a bit on the campaign's efforts to combat the nasty rumors that are flying around the Internet, including the Obama Fight the Smears site.

Still, polls show that some voters still have the wrong idea about his faith, misinformation that anti-Obama groups have attempted to exploit.

Within an hour of the interview's broadcast, anti-Obama groups were pushing the issue on blogs and via YouTube.

Someone spliced together only his misstatement and was emailing it with the false claim Obama "admits" the Muslim faith. Here is the full exchange in context.

And here is the transcript:

STEPHANOPOULOS: You mention your Christian faith. Yesterday you took off after the Republicans for suggesting you have Muslim connections.

Just a few minutes ago, Rick Davis, John McCain's campaign manager, said they've never done that. This is a false and cynical attempt to play victim.

OBAMA: You know what? I mean, these guys love to throw a rock and hide their hand. The...

STEPHANOPOULOS: The McCain campaign has never suggested you have Muslim connections.

OBAMA: No, no, no. But the -- I don't think that when you look at what is being promulgated on Fox News, let's say, and Republican commentators who are closely allied to these folks...

STEPHANOPOULOS: But John McCain said that's wrong.

OBAMA: Now, well, look. Listen. You and I both know that the minute that Governor Palin was forced to talk about her daughter, I immediately said that's off limits. And...

STEPHANOPOULOS: But John McCain said the same thing about questioning your faith.

OBAMA: And what was the first thing the McCain's campaign went out and did? They said, look, these liberal blogs that support Obama are out there attacking Governor Palin.

Let's not play games. What I was suggesting -- you're absolutely right that John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith. And you're absolutely right that that has not come...

STEPHANOPOULOS: Christian faith.

OBAMA: ... my Christian faith. Well, what I'm saying is that he hasn't suggested...

STEPHANOPOULOS: Has connections, right.

OBAMA: ... that I'm a Muslim. And I think that his campaign's upper echelons have not, either.

What I think is fair to say is that, coming out of the Republican camp, there have been efforts to suggest that perhaps I'm not who I say I am when it comes to my faith -- something which I find deeply offensive, and that has been going on for a pretty long time.

Thank you for putting the whole truth out. I can see how that could be taken and destroyed to smear him once again. The Republicans will do any and everything to win this election. You know what hurts me the most about the Republican Party, they called themselves Christians, but I have found out they are true liars, theives, false witnesses and murderers. They are smiling faces that tell lies and have corrupted this nation with their rhetoric. I'm a Christian and I tell it, just like I see it! Republicans are nothing, but hypocrites!

I beg to defer with the premise that Obama is a Christian. As with most bio tidbits with Obama, it's all about"Lawyer Speak" EX: "I never heard Rev Wright give a sermon like that". He may not have, but after 20 years with Rev Wright, he had to KNOW Wright gave sermons like that. Which brings me to the point. UTC is a Black Liberation Theology (BLT) community. For 20 years, Obama, and his family attended, supported, taught classes (Michelle), and Parishionered in this church. Obama and family are believers of BLT. Wikipedia gives a watered down version of BLT. And here is one of many disturbing quotes. ""Black theology cannot accept a view of God which does not represent God as being for oppressed blacks and thus against white oppressors. Living in a world of white oppressors, blacks have no time for a neutral God. The brutalities are too great and the pain too severe, and this means we must know where God is and what God is doing in the revolution. There is no use for a God who loves white oppressors the same as oppressed blacks. We have had too much of white love, the love that tells blacks to turn the other cheek and go the second mile. What we need is the divine love as expressed in black power, which is the power of blacks to destroy their oppressors, here and now, by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject God's love." [A Black Theology of Liberation, p. 70]" Does this sound like what a Christian would believe and teach?

I would like to know more about this internet fire. I appreciate the irony of republican bloggers smearing Obama with a quote from Obama accusing republican bloggers of smearing him. But are there any bloggers exploiting this quote who have a serious readership, or associations with a serious publication, or associations with the republican party itself? Or is this just a bunch of potentially mentally diseased individuals spilling out their paranoias on unread blogs? I get the throwing stones and hiding metaphor but perhaps in this case someone else completely is throwing the stones.

Have you all been drinking the coolaid? I'm a criminal defense investigator and interview witnesses on video for the purpose of determining the truthfulness of the answers given in the interview using time tested techniques used by law enforcement worldwide. If you don't think that when Obama casually stated "My Muslim Faith", it doesn't indicate something, I disagree. Obama did not adjust his statement, the Interviewer did. He was being intervied by a former Clinton Press Secretary, presumably a Democrat. He was in friendly waters in this interview. There was no reason to indicate he was nervous and therefore, had a case of Slip of the tongue. No, in my opinion, he was having a conversation with a friend and to quote a very famous Philosopher/Teacher, "Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks". Obama, in his formative years, grew up as a Muslim. The Muslims, including the leadership of Iran, consider him a Muslim. His Christian experience was with a sect of the Christians considered radical and in harmony with some of radical Islam. I would think that after 911, that the vetting of this candidate by the Dept of Homeland Security is woefully inadequate.

BO is a Muslim and he finally got caught admitting it! I cannot wait until he has presure put on him in a debate and he starts that stuttering, stamering like an idiot he is! He is a Muslim and the Muslim world is proclaiming it and rubbing it in our faces. How far would a candidate have gotten in WWII if they had been raised a Nazi and had a slip of the tongue like Barry?

He will say whatever he thinks people want him to say. He says he is Christian but I'm sure he still is a Muslim. There is nothing wrong with being Muslim but with the current world climate he feels he better say he's Christian running for U.S. President. I can't believe people are going to vote for him. They're like Lemmings. I'm not a McCain fan but Obama would be a disaster as President. He doesn't have a clue.

Look who's now talking... If you go to Liberal websites which are all over the internet- you could see how vile, nasty and imprudent these people could get! Call it a slip BUT as a candidate running for the highest post in the country, you can NOT afford to make any mistakes like that and on national TV at that!! I haven't made up my mind yet on who to vote but frankly, I'm disappointed with the Democrats way of campaigning- using the media who will create anything and make up anything at all cost to win. The democrats are the ones playing it dirtier... maybe i should be choosing the lesser evil of the two!! OBAMA SAID THESE WORDS, SLIP OR NOT, HE SAID IT!! The Republicans have nothing to do with it. It came straight from the horse's mouth!! i find the views here interesting and would like to share: http://myrealitytelevision.com/special-coverage-us-elections-2008/ thanks you. let's keep commenting friendly and open in washington times. there are two sides to every story. the liberals are highly charged and emotional- doesn't think, it could just discourage undecided voters- and i'm telling you, never underestimate the power of the undecided voters- they might just go and vote for the republicans just because they don't want to be associated with democrats who can't seem to know when to cage their highly charged rhetorics.

Obama doesn't have a good track record. I'm not a great fan of McCain, but at least I can look at his track record and see where he is coming from. Yup, he can be dirty, but you know how he works. Not who I would have chosen for the Republicans, but Obama is not who I would have chosen for the Democrats either. He has no experience that would qualify him for the office he is seeking. The fact that he didn't know WHAT TO SAY when his teleprompter quit working was very telling. He is a puppet. Who has their hand up his behind telling him what to say? To elect him to be President of the United States would be an Obamanation!

That was no slip of the tounge. He said exactly what he meant. Obama is no Christian and is not Patriotic. It sickens me to think of him as the Commander-in-Chief of an armed forces that he dosen't even respect.
