Guzman hits for cycle

Quick update from the Nationals-Dodgers game--though they waited almost an inning to announce this over the PA at Nationals Park--Cristian Guzman just became the seventh player in franchise history and the second since the team moved to the District to hit for the cycle.

The shortstop did it the hard way, too, tripling to the center field wall off Joe Beimel in the eighth inning. The way Guzman came around second, it was pretty clear he knew what was at stake. He slid in to a raucous response from the Nationals' dugout, where most players were on the top step cheering.

Brad Wilkerson was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it April 6, 2005 against Philadelphia. Guzman is 4-for-6 tonight with three RBI and two runs.

For those interested, here are the seven Washington major leaguers who have ever hit for the cycle. Note that Guzman is the only one to have done it at home:

-- Otis Clymer: Oct. 2, 1908 at NYY

-- Goose Goslin: Aug. 28, 1924 at NYY

-- Joe Cronin: Sept. 2, 1929 at BOS

-- Mickey Vernon: May 19, 1946 at CHW

-- Jim King: May 26, 1964 at BOS

-- Brad Wilkerson: April 6, 2005 at PHI

-- Cristian Guzman: August 28, 2008 vs LAD
