Well, the Roger Bernadina experiment lasted less than two weeks. The Nationals optioned the rookie center fielder to Class AAA Columbus today and recalled Ryan Langerhans to take his roster spot.
Bernadina, 24, didn't exact light the world on fire in his big-league debut. He went 5-for-40 with no walks and 12 strikeouts in 10 games. In his defense, this is a guy who had half a season at Class AA and honestly wasn't ready to face big-league pitching. I suspect we'll see him again in September, but right now he needs to face a lower level of competition.
Langerhans is back after hitting .319 at Columbus. Look, the guy probably isn't going to hit much up here. Even at his best, he's a .240 hitter. But he plays the game hard, plays good defense, can play all three outfield positions and is well-liked within the clubhouse. I can't tell you how many guys were genuinely upset when he was sent down three weeks ago.
On another note, the Nats are holding their third annual Christmas in July Toy Drive this weekend. Fans are asked to bring new, unwrapped toys to the park tonight, tomorrow and Sunday. U.S. Marine Corps Reserves will be on hand to collect the toys and distribute them to local children in need. The main collection station will be at the center field gate and will open 2 1/2 hours prior to gametime.
