Thru 4 1/2: Lannan snakebit again

← return to Chatter

What does John Lannan have to do to get his 10th win of the season? He's looked strong against the Braves so far tonight, but the Nats can't get anything going against Javier Vazquez, and two unearned runs have Atlanta up 2-0. Lannan has thrown 89 pitches through five innings, uncharacteristically registering five strikeouts. He got in trouble, though, when he allowed a hit and a walk in the first inning. It shouldn't have been a problem, because Yunel Escobar hit a two-out grounder right at Pete Orr, but the ball went five-hole on Orr, and the inning kept going. Lannan didn't help from there--he gave up another single and walk--but the inning would've been over had Orr made the play. And he's thrown well since then. The Nats' offense, though, is another story. It has just two hits on Vazquez tonight, and is limping through another game against a tough pitcher. This lineup is limping toward the finish, and with the Braves' pitching staff, it could be a long weekend. So we're midway through the fifth, and Lannan probably has another inning or two at most. Which means the Nats are running out of time to get him win No. 10.
