Ox Hill Battlefield Dedicated

By Martha M. Boltz on Sept. 2, 2008 into The Civil War

After many years of work and dedication by local enthusiasts, the Ox Hill Battlefield was re-opened as a new park cultural facility on Monday, September 1.  Despite the fact of the holiday opening and with many other places drawing the attention of residents, a crowd approaching 300 people arrived on the scene early and could be seen walking around, reading the interpretive plaques and learning about the battlefield, said to be the only "Battle" in Fairfax County; not including numerous skirmishes, engagements, etc. etc.

Included were several Boy Scout Troops and some Girl Scouts as well, with their leaders, who were attentive and interested the whole time, a herd of reenactors in full regalia,  an artillery/cannon crew struggling to push/pull the heavy limber up the incline which gave the battlefield its name, as well as a goodly assortment of park authority folks, local political interested parties and just plain residents. One of the speakers did mention the article on Ox Hill in The Washington Times as well.

I talked with two charming ladies who live in one of the apartment complexes which are  "next door neighbors" to the little beleagured battlefield, and who were determined to keep watch on it and make sure it all was handled well. Their interest was exciting.  Several members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars were there, as well as a scattering of people whose ancestors had actually taken part in the fighting on that day.  The United Daughters of the Confederacy was represented by Mrs. Michael Masters, Virginia Division President, as well as some local members.

The sun shone brightly, the music by Evergreen Shade was lovely, and the large gold ribbon cutting went off without a hitch. Several other activities were planned throughout the day, and it was a lovely ceremony put on in a meaningful way.

Now if we could just convince the numerous folks who walk their dogs in the park to clean up after their pets rather than leaving "deposits" on the brick walk.....all would be well.

And we need to protect and keep more battlefields -- they aren't making any more of them.
