Quick hits from Maryland media day

Sophomore Dominique Herald is suspended for the Aug. 30 season opener against Delaware for a violation of team rules. Friedgen said Herald is expected to move back to safety from linebacker.

* Freshman Kenny Tate was moved from wide receiver to safety. That's a wild first day on the job. Friedgen said Tate will have the option to move back after this season, but the fact is Maryland has a glut of receivers. He might beat all of his fellow freshmen wideouts onto the field.

* Offensive lineman Evan Eastburn transferred out of the program. Defensive tackle Dean Muhtadi was placed on scholarship earlier in the summer. If another scholarship opens up at some juncture, chances are it goes to Olugbemi Otulaja.

* Offensive lineman Tyler Bowen (foot), defensive lineman Joe Vellano (shoulder) and wide receiver Kevin Dorsey (foot) are not in camp but will report when school begins. Friedgen said Dorsey was likely to undergo an operation.

Rumors were always out there that Tate would one day play Safety, just didn't see it coming so quickly. At 6'3" 215, he really has the look of an intimidating ballhawk, not sure if he has the mentality for the position. Looks like Boykins will be the only one of the 3 highly ranked WRs to actually have a shot to play as a WR this season.

Buddha --- Even with Tate moving and Dorsey probably stuck being a non-factor this fall with surgery looming, there's still 12 wideouts on scholarship. It's early (the first practice is in progress now), but it'll probably take a lot from Boykins to make it onto the field this season.

No offense to the current crop of safeties, but it's a lot easier to see Tate break the two-deep at that position than at WR. Who's the last really good safety Maryland had? Madieu Williams?
