Scott, E. Williams, Baltz named to all-ACC team

Just got a look at the all-conference teams, as voted by media members throughout the league.

Three Maryland players earned first-team honors: Tailback Da'Rel Scott, center Edwin Williams and punter Travis Baltz.

Two of those make plenty of sense. Williams has played well all season, a beacon of consistency for an inconsistent team. Baltz quietly emerged as the next really good Maryland punter.

As for Scott, he followed up a torrid start with a shoulder injury and then some rough games late in the year --- with a shaky offensive line a big part of the reason. Given the way Clemson's C.J. Spiller came on toward the end of the season, he might have been a better choice.

Imagine that: Spiller actually being a bit underrated. Would have never guessed that would happen after spending the summer hearing about him and fellow tailback James Davis anytime ACC football was mentioned.

Spiller's exclusion isn't nearly as galling as the decision to leave Virginia linebacker Clint Sintim off the first team. The senior was one of the two best players I saw in person this year (Florida State's Everette Brown was the other), and the last I checked a lot of college teams use a 3-4 rather than a 4-3. Maybe an extra linebacker spot would make some sense, but then again

Meanwhile, linebacker Alex Wujciak was a second-team choice. Honorable mention picks from Maryland include wideout Darrius Heyward-Bey, tight end Dan Gronkowski, tackle Scott Burley, guard Jaimie Thomas and defensive tackle Jeremy Navarre.
