There were lots of happy people in Annapolis last night after Navy scored 26 straight points in the fourth quarter and overtime to topple Temple.
The folks at the EagleBank Bowl were among the most thrilled.
There will be no sitting around and waiting for Navy to become bowl eligible. Not through a bye week, not through a game against Notre Dame in Baltimore, not through a midweek tussle at Northern Illinois.
It wasn’t a stretch to think the Midshipmen might not have notched Win No. 6 until their season finale against Army had they lost to Temple. Instead, that issue is irrelevant and Navy is headed to RFK Stadium on Dec. 20.
Here’s the last edition of the Mids’ 2007 vs. 2008 chart, since that half of the inaugural bowl’s matchup is set:
|2008 Opponent||Result||2007 Equivalent ||Result|
|Towson||W, 41-13 ||Delaware||L, 59-52|
|at Ball State||L, 35-23||Ball State||L, 34-31 (OT)|
|at Duke||L, 41-31||Duke||W, 46-43|
|Rutgers||W, 23-21||at Rutgers||L, 41-24|
|at Wake Forest||W, 24-17||Wake Forest||L, 44-24|
|at Air Force||W, 33-27||Air Force||W, 31-20|
|Pittsburgh||L, 42-21||at Pittsburgh||W, 48-45 (2OT)|
|Southern Methodist ||W, 34-7||at North Texas||W, 74-62|
|Temple||W, 33-27 (OT) ||at Temple||W, 30-19|
|vs. Notre Dame||at Notre Dame||W, 46-44 (3OT)|
|at Northern Illinois||Northern Illinois||W, 35-24|
|vs. Army||vs. Army||W, 38-3|
This narrows the focus down to the ACC, which looks like a reasonably good bet to send nine teams into the postseason. There are five teams in the league – Boston College, Florida State, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest – in need of only one more victory to become bowl eligible.
It’ll take another week or two for things to really shake out. But at this point, the game at RFK just needs nine bowl-bound teams from the ACC. Once that happens, it’ll become much easier to project a possible opponent for Navy.
ACC teams with 5+ wins: 9
ACC teams at .500 or better: 11
ACC teams that are bowl eligible: 4 (Georgia Tech, Maryland, Miami, North Carolina)
Current projected team to the EagleBank Bowl: Boston College or Duke
