Where was DHB?

This question’s popped up today, and it’s actually an easy one to answer.

I’ve seen some curiosity as I troll some message boards as to why Maryland didn’t nominate Darrius Heyward-Bey for ACC player of the week.

As a member of the voting panel, I can actually offer some insight into this.

A school is allowed to nominate one player at each position, and offensive back includes quarterbacks, running backs and wideouts. So that left Maryland with a choice between quarterback Chris Turner and Heyward-Bey, since both couldn’t be submitted.

The point for each school should probably be finding a way to get as many players honored as possible. Turner, with his 300-yard passing day, had a much better chance of winning votes than Heyward-Bey (11 catches, 101 yards, TD). There was at least one receiver in the league with more yards and one more TD than Heyward-Bey.

Turner, it turns out, won the vote – which made Maryland look pretty smart for going in that direction.

By the way, the other categories are offensive lineman (offensive line and tight ends), defensive lineman (defensive linemen and inside linebackers), defensive back (outside linebackers and secondary), rookies (freshmen or redshirt freshmen) and special teams (um, anyone on special teams).

Hope that clears up some questions on the subject.
