When former Maryland tight ends and special teams coach Danny Pearman left for Clemson at the end of the regular season last year, it made sense on a number of levels.
It was his alma mater.
He’d coached new Clemson head man Dabo Swinney at Alabama.
His family was from the area.
He hadn’t sold his house in North Carolina (he’d been at Duke and North Carolina the previous two years).
There was a spiffy title.
And also, it turns out, some nice pay.
Like $190,000 a year for two years.
Maryland, by the way, cannot afford to pay a position coach nearly 200 grand a season.
It’s a fact of life. And it’s also why if Clemson ever got around to hiring a truly exceptional staff (and maybe this one will be) and maximized its financial advantages, it wouldn’t be 3-5 against Maryland over an eight-year span again for quite a long time.
