Just wanted to offer a quick rundown of 10 games any area lacrosse fan should really be looking forward to this season.
Not all of them will be played within an hour of D.C., but there’s obviously a rooting interest in all of them in some form or another.
As for a single game involving teams outside the area, keep an eye out for Duke’s visit to North Carolina on March 14. Could that be the day the Tar Heels’ 18-game losing streak to ACC teams ends? Quite possibly.
But back to the region, for 10 can’t-miss games
* Georgetown at Maryland (Feb. 21)
The Beltway Behemoths go at it in College Park. It’s the beginning of a doubleheader; Maryland-North Carolina basketball follows at 3:30.
* Virginia at Syracuse (Feb. 27)
The pro stadium was nice, but it’s good to get this rivalry back on campus for a couple years. Plus, there’s always a good chance we’ll see plenty of Orange in Foxboro(ugh) come Memorial Day weekend.
* Maryland vs. Duke at Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium (Feb. 28)
It’s the big game in the first of three Inside Lacrosse-sponsored events this season. Maryland is hyped, and Duke lost a ton. This is a chance to show there might be a changing of the guard in the ACC.
* UMBC at Maryland (March 14)
Underestimate the Retrievers at your own risk. They ripped Maryland in the 2007 tournament, then edged them last season. This could be a payback game, but UMBC remains talented and underappreciated.
* Johns Hopkins at Syracuse (March 14)
It’s a rematch of last year’s national title game. Nothing more needs to be said.
* Virginia at Johns Hopkins (March 21)
The Cavaliers always seem to play well against Hopkins, even when the deck is stacked against them (see: 2004). Just a hunch, but this could be another classic in a fantastic rivalry.
* Maryland at Virginia (March 28)
They played a best-of-3 series a year ago, and it would come as no surprise if the Terps and Cavs somehow saw each other in the ACC and NCAA tournaments again this spring.
* Army vs. Navy at Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium (April 11)
Maybe not the greatest game, though Navy would beg to differ after a decade-long winning streak against the Black Knights was halted last year. Could be a huge turnout in a pro stadium, especially combined with…
* Maryland vs. Johns Hopkins at Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium (April 11)
Yeah, this will be cool. Hopkins turned around its season the last two years with mid-April victories over Maryland. The Terps are looking for their first win in the series since the Joe Walters game in 2006.
* Navy at Johns Hopkins (April 18)
Maybe this will be the year for Navy.
