Eurobasket is a tricky website for people who are accustomed to getting their information for free.
That covers most Americans, thanks to the decision by newspaper operators to give away their product online for the last decade. But that’s a rant for another day, though probably not one when the long-term stability of my industry is any better.
But that’s a digression. The point of mentioning Eurobasket is you can usually look up some information, but not everything you want. Still, you can get an idea of what is going on. Today, for instance, former George Washington star Shawnta Rogers is off to France. And there’s also a poll to name the top long-ranger shooter in the Turkish league; options include Joe Crispin, Chris Lofton and Ralph Mims.
Anyway, I’m too cheap to pay 34 cents a day for the opportunity for full access, but was able to come up with a couple bits of data on two of last year’s Maryland players to pass along.
Forward James Gist, who was drafted late in the second round of the NBA Draft by San Antonio, wound up with Angelico Biella in Italy’s Serie A. Angelico isn’t doing all that great – 6-9 and tied for 10th in a 16-team league – but Gist is having a steady season. He’s averaging 11.9 points and 5.4 rebounds, while shooting 58.2 percent from the floor and 42.1 percent from beyond the arc.
Meanwhile, Maryland fan favorite Bambale Osby is thriving in Romania with U. Mobitel. CN. Osby is averaging 11.5 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in the top Romanian league, and is also shooting 52.8 percent. The most amusing stat of the bunch – he’s hit at least one 3-pointer this season. With a 16.7 percent effort from beyond the arc, he’s managed some multiple of 1-for-6.
