Just a little bit of roster mechanics to pass along – something that gets Maryland down to (by my unofficial count) 87 scholarships (two above the NCAA maximum) for 2009.
Linebacker Jeff Clement is finishing up his coursework by the end of the summer and will not return next season, a team spokesman confirmed.
This really isn’t that much of a surprise. Clement played in 13 games as a redshirt sophomore in 2007, recording a tackle and an assist. If memory serves, he didn’t play at all last year (he definitely didn’t travel to any regular season games).
When a guy is in a program for four years and has barely played, well, it just isn’t all that stunning when they don’t come back for a fifth year.
His departure (the New Jersey native is still in school on scholarship this semester) does provide even less of a roster crunch for Ralph Friedgen, who won’t struggle to get under the limit nearly as much as he has the last two seasons.
