Offense a bit better in scrimmage #2

A few quick tidbits before heading home and blogging some more.

* It was a breakout day for Gary Douglas. The redshirt freshman tailback ran for 122 yards on 17 carries, and have might have just vaulted himself into the chase for the No. 3 running back spot.

* After a sluggish start to camp, Torrey Smith is back. He caught a 33-yard touchdown from Chris Turner on an early possession in the scrimmage.

* The kicking mess, same as it ever was. Mike Barbour looked good early, not-so-much late. It's Barbour and Nick Ferrara at this stage; Nick Wallace didn't even get a look.

* Lots of guys were either held out or limited. Alex Wujciak, Adrian Moten, Travis Ivey and Jamari McCollough were all among them.

* The offensive line was better than in the first scrimmage. Not great, but better.

* Punter Travis Baltz looked good other than a couple tries that were meant to be sent into the coffin corner; they went off the side of his foot. Otherwise, he might just be the surest thing on the roster.

* Unquestioned highlight No. 1: Watching Bruce Campbell pick up a fumble and chug downfield. If the Terps didn't need him to block, he would be one impressive goal line back.

* Unquestioned highlight No. 2: Caleb Porzel zig-zagged through the defense for a 35-yard touchdown that was ultimately called back. His speed will be difficult to keep off the field, and coach Ralph Friedgen acknowledged as much.

* Unquestioned lowlight: Penalties. Lots of them. Friedgen's right when he says this bunch can ill-afford them, perhaps moreso than some past teams.

OK, I've been booted from the student union and am getting devoured by bugs. Not a good thing. More to come after the drive back to D1scourse headquarters in Glen Burnie.
