Ralph Friedgen doesn't like to officially hand out a scholarship to a walk-on until camp is over, mainly to ensure they keep working hard.

But pretty much everyone inside the Gossett team house knew Andrew Gonnella and Paul Pinegar were going to wind up on scholarship this season.

Friedgen acknowledged this virtually open secret, and it makes a lot of sense. By the unofficial D1scourse count, he had four 'ships to play with, and both guys are probable opening night starters.

Gonnella, who you can read more about in tomorrow's dead-tree edition, is both big and dogged, an impressive combination for any offensive lineman. Pinegar, the likely starter at right tackle, is smaller but was part of the Terps' top eight linemen since the middle of the 2007 season.

They join a rather substantial list of former walk-ons who went on to earn scholarships and play substantial roles for the Terrapins --- Moise Fokou, Dan Ennis, Joey Haynos, Dean Muhtadi and Bemi Otulaja among them.
