Maryland moves along

Well, the big mystery entering the NCAA tournament was basic: How good was Notre Dame?

As in, how much did the Fighting Irish’s 15-0 record mean?

It would seem Maryland provided an emphatic answer, going on the road to clobber Notre Dame 7-3.

Brian Phipps made nine saves for the Terrapins, who advance to a meeting with either Syracuse or Siena on Saturday at Hofstra.

Things weren’t ever close. Maryland led 6-1 at one point, and put 21 of its 33 shots on goal. The Terps were 20-for-20 on clears, ensuring Notre Dame didn’t get many cheap possessions.

Does this negate the so-so season that Maryland has endured? Not entirely; this is a 10-6 team, after all.

But the Terps are now just a game away from finishing where they were expected to coming into the spring – in the final four.
