Maryland kickoff returner Torrey Smith was named the ACC’s specialist of the week for the second time this season.

The sophomore had six kickoff returns for 204 yards and a touchdown in Saturday’s 38-31 loss at N.C. State.

Consider this an excuse for a look at where Smith ranks on the ACC’s career kickoff return list.

Two things worth noting:

* Smith now owns the two best kickoff return yardage seasons in ACC history – with 1,089 yards last year and 1,113 this fall. That’s a function of talent, opportunity (lots of points yielded) and kickoffs moved back to the 30 a couple years ago to create more chances to bring kicks back.

* If Smith maintains his pace, he’ll add another 371 yards in the next three games and finish the year at 2,573 yards – well within range of securing the record early next season.
