Just in from the ACC … a couple individual awards for Maryland.
Special teams star Nick Ferrara was named the conference’s co-specialist of the week along with Virginia kicker Robert Randolph. Ferrara had a field goal, three extra points and knocked three of his eight punts inside the 20.
Meanwhile, Demetrius Hartsfield earned the conference’s rookie of the week award. The weak-side linebacker had 10 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery – those last three all a part of the game-clinching play in Saturday’s 24-21 victory over Clemson.
I was curious to see how often Maryland has secured these awards from the eight-person voting panel (full disclosure: I’m part of it) that selects these things each week.
So as much so I have a list to work with going forward, here are Maryland’s conference players of the week since 2005. Of immediate relevance is Hartsfield is the first Terp to earn a rookie of the week honor since Darrius Heyward-Bey in 2006:
