Maryland's edge

California coach Jeff Tedford was asked about Maryland's defense during the Pac-10 teleconference --- one he was quick to acknowledge is vastly different than the one the Golden Bears faced last year.

Granted, Maryland did a pretty decent job of holding down Cal for the first three quarters before the Golden Bears shredded a prevent defense.

But Tedford knows Saturday won't be anything like facing last year's Maryland team.

"There's going to be an element of surprise there," Tedford said. "You're a little uncomfortable going in because you're wondering what's going to happen because there's no background."

Those aren't his only concerns. Tedford pointed out that Chris Turner essentially solidifed his job by handling Cal last year, and that Da'Rel Scott was enjoying a strong day before leaving with an injury.

"We understand their balance, and that we're going to have to stop the run," Tedford said. "But you can't stack up against the run because the quarterback [can also beat you]."
