Ralph and the ACC teleconference

One of the things not mentioned in today’s dead-tree edition story about turnovers and other miscues was one of the ploys Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen came up with to assess penalties.

But as he promised during yesterday afternoon’s press conference, officials arrived just as the media was leaving practice to reinforce some of Maryland’s problems.

And, yes, the updowns arrived as promised, too – 10 for every turnover committed.

But in terms of big developments, there wasn’t much coming from today’s ACC teleconference. Friedgen said the team had a meeting yesterday, that he’s met with his Terrapin Council (a group of 10 players) and is pleased with the leadership on his team.

Realistically, though, leadership isn’t the problem Maryland is facing. Self-inflicted damage coupled with experience and depth issues at some critical places are far more pressing issues for the Terps as they get ready for Saturday’s opener against Clemson.

“A lot of people are down on us right now, but I don’t think our players are,” Friedgen said. “I’m hoping we’ll be ready to play. We’re going to have to be ready to play this week.”
