Beaten By the Bengals

Yesterday I made a guest appearance on the Fox 5 Redskins Post-Game Show with Dave Feldman. I really had a great time. I hope you all had a chance to tune in. It even gave me a little pre-game adrenaline rush, and that was cool! I watched the first half of the game at home and the second half at the Fox 5 studios in DC. I was reminded of when I was a little boy watching the old Houston Oilers games more than 35 years ago when I watched those games with so much intensity. Doing post-game commentary was new for me but it felt the same as when I was a player: I just wanted to do a good job.

In case you missed the show, here is a summary of my thoughts on the game. First and foremost, it’s ridiculous that the Redskins fell to the last place Bengals, but no I don’t think Zorn’s job is in jeopardy. However, if he doesn’t change some of his management practices, he could be in for lots more headaches down the road.

As far as the game, I can sum it up in only one word: unacceptable. There is no excuse for loosing to a Bengals team with a record of 1-11-1, particularly when you are (were) still in the playoff hunt. I don’t necessarily think that Zorn's decision to twice go with Seller's on the goal line vs. Portis was in anyway motivated by some of the inflammatory comments from Portis last week, but nevertheless that choice in play calling may well be the reason that we find ourselves at .500 with a 7-7 record. I’m sorry to say it folks, but barring some major help from other teams; it looks like yesterday’s loss put the nail in the coffin of our playoffs hopes. Oh well, let's hope that 2009 will be our year! Go Skins!

I've read a lot of blogs over the past few weeks. I've seen a lot of comments from fans demanding that Sellers carry the ball (especially during red zone executions) and I'm left wondering who they blame this week. I think there was just a lack of intensity on some of the player's parts. Combined with bizarre play calling (Sellers) it was a disaster. I agree, I don't think Zorn called the running plays because of Portis, but it makes you wonder if he listened to other people's/fans demands!

You're right clp, for years coaches have used their big fullbacks in those kind of short yardage situations, it's just that this team is dealing with all of this silly drummer with Portis that created the second guessing, that said, i have no problem with sellers getting a chance to carry the ball.
