2009 Here We Come!

By DARRELL GREEN on Dec. 18, 2008 into Darrell Green

Well, it’s Thursday December 18, 2008 four days after the death of the Redskins 2008 season. By now everything has been said. I know that at least some of the dust has cleared, despite the fact that we seem to be operating in an environment around here that is like that of a construction site, where with dust never seems to settle.

Today, my advice to Coach Zorn and the team would be to approach these last two weeks with a mind set as if they are already beginning their off season training. Start getting ready for next season guys. What do I mean by this? Let me explain. First of all, this season is over! Secondly, who cares if we finish 9-7, 7-9 or 8-8? The answer is nobody because if we don’t make the playoffs it does matter anyway. And finally, in two short months they will be begin their official off season training, to hopefully win big in 2009. So I’m thinking let’s not go home and sleep on this nightmare. Instead let’s begin building that championship strategy for ‘09 right now.

Here’s how: we’ve got to use these last two games as preparations, sort of like pre-season games. The playoffs are gone. The Pro Bowl teams have already been picked and 2009 is just days away. Let’s move on now and start looking ahead today. Let everybody know that Jim Zorn is staying. Start the three young pass catchers from this year’s draft. Start Rogers, Tyron and Hall at the corner and nickel spots so we can see what we got in them. Put the ball in Betts’ hands to see if he’s for real. Finally, let’s simply keep our mouths shut and let our actions speak for us. Let’s agree to let the chips fall where they may and focus on ‘09. Just one man’s opinion let me hear yours. DG28

I have to agree with Darrell on what the skins should be doing these final 2 games. Unfortunately, reading elsewhere it seems they've already decided to stay the course rather than find out what they have for next year. I would much rather see every starter sat, and every reserve start (at positions where that is possible) as it this were preseason game 1. Most notably, I'd sit Moss, Portis, Cooley, Randle El, Campbell, and Betts. I'd start Heyer, Reinhart, Geisinger (hope that's correct) on the line, Kelly and Thomas should be forced to play as starters to see how they react, along with Davis at TE. I'd have resigned Marcus Mason since we have no other "young" RB and we know what Betts offers from previous years. And I'd start Colt. Not to start a QB battle, but because very simply, you need to know if he's a viable backup, and/or starter. All these young guns need to be put into the fire at this point to find out if they should be replaced during the offseason or held onto. also, by playing them all, especially Colt, you might create a situation where you build value for a trade later on. considering the poor state of our lines, I'd like to know if Colt can play QB at this level, like next year, and if so, I'd be looking to trade Moss, Cooley, Campbell, and Portis if possible, not because I don't like them or they aren't the best we have at their spots, but because they ARE the best we have, and they would net us the most in return. We need linemen on both sides. Todd Collins and/or Colt should be able to get us thru next year, and maybe Colt is the real deal. But until we have a line, none of our QB's will be really successful. Until we can pass rush, our defense will be good, but won't be able to get itself off the field. Our D is great when our O holds the ball 38 minutes, but hold the ball 25, and out D right now can't hold up. They don't create pressure which leads to T/O's. I'd rather re-build our core than keep patching it up while repainting our fascade :) Until our O-line can run/pass block properly without breaking down due to age/injury, adn D-line can get pressure by itself, we can't be as successful as we would all like.

DG, to settle the biggest argument among fans right now...would you take this time to put Colt Brennan in to get some snaps or stick with JC? Would you play Collins at all?

Wow! I love it, yes, we might sound a little over the top, but at the end of the day we are right, let's shake it up and hope that it helps us get a head start on the 2009 season. who can argue that.

just to clarify, I am not saying take anybodies starting spot today, but i am saying let's take this additional free/dead time as an extended 2009 pre-season and learn more about some of the backup player.

clp5150, Collins is a backup period, that's been his role for basisly his entire career.i don't say this to be mean toward him, I'm only stating the facts. I think Jason should and will be the starter but, it still during this time wouldn't hurt to give the young Colt a ride.

well, he may be a career back up, but he got the skins in the playoffs last year

the skins are like an old restaurant that can't quite seem to get it right any more---the new reliable chain restaurants are moving in and they are making all the right moves. they've tried new cooks, new menu, change prices, redecorate, etc. But they're just not makin the cut. They don't need a new menu and some great specials with fancy names and high prices---they need to blow up the entire building and start over. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year DG, maybe you could hook your top commentor (me) up with 2 tickets to the Super Bowl in Tampa to watch Carolina v Tennessee! but wouldn't it be crazy to see the Manning bros in a match up of the last two Super Bowl champs? who do you think is going?
