Well, the Caps keep winning and it doesn't seem to matter who the opponent is or what personality the game takes on. The Caps won a wild 5-4 shootout thanks to a furious comeback 11 days against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden. There would be no revenge for the Blueshirts tonight in a 2-1
Washington victory.
Here are some notes from after the game:
*
Alex Ovechkin now has 27 goals, which is tied with Philadelphia's Jeff Carter for the
NHL lead. Carter's team is playing right now at Los Angeles.
It was Ovechkin's fourth shorthanded goal of his career, but the first since his rookie season. When asked if he remembered it, Ovechkin didn't at first, but when told it was against Ottawa he responded, 'Oh yea, Zubie won a faceoff.'
* Mike Green has 10 goals and 26 points in 27 games. He had a pair of OT winners against the Rangers last season, and notched another big one against thr Rags tonight.
* The Green goal was at the end of a great assist from
Alexander Semin, who was making his return from a back injury. While's Semin pass was memorable, his fight with
Marc Staal topped it. Semin's lone NHL fight before this came at K-Plex, where he and former teammate Bryan Muir scrapped during practice.
Now he has a real one to his credit. After Staal dropped Semin and Ovechkin returned the favor, Staal and Semin dropped the mitts next to the New York goal. It was mostly a wrestling match -- until Semin got Staal on the ground and started wailing away at him.
"I've seen him fight once before, but I've never seen him drum roll a guy," Green said.
Semin was ejected from the game for having his jersey come off during the fight. When Bruce Boudreau was asked if Semin will have the jersey tied down from now on, he said he doesn't expect fighting to become the norm for his Russian sniper.
* The Caps are 26-11-3, which is the best 40-game start in team history. Now, those teams from the 80s didn't have shootouts or 4-on-4 overtimes, but it is still pretty impressive. Boudreau pointed the potential record out to his team before the game on a dry erase board in the dressing room.
* Jose Theodore stopped 21 of 22 shots for his fifth straight win. In his past four starts, he is sporting a 1.50 GAA and a .940 save percentage.
Brent Johnson has a 3.20 GAA and an .870 save percentage in his last four starts (there was also his three save night at the Garden, too). Looks like this team is hitting the mid-point of the season with their goalies in exactly the roles they began the season with.
* Eric Fehr was really, really good tonight. He was only credited with three shots on net (he had five that were blocked/missed) but he had three takeaways. drew three penalties and was inches from a couple of goals.
That line, with David Steckel and Chris Clark, was the team's best. It was the type of game for a line like that to play well. Mike Green said the ice wasn't great, which could be expected with the Georgetown game earlier in the day.
