This chart ran in the paper the other day, but since most people don't a) have access to the paper or b) only read online anyway, I thought I'd put it on here.

Here are some names to watch among the potential rental players if the Washington Capitals decide to use their newfound salary cap space from the subtraction of Michael Nylander to make a trade:
1. Scott Niedermayer, D, Anaheim
Contract: $6.75 million
Skinny: The Ducks are drowning, and this could be it for him. The Caps would have to include some salary in the deal, but how scary would this team be with him and Mike Green on the back end?
2. Keith Tkachuk, F, St. Louis
Contract: $2.55 million
Skinny: He's near the end of the line and the Caps are deep up front, but he's a tough, versatile forward who might have one Sergei Fedorov-like rejuvenation left in him. The Caps have gotten some nice production from their rotating band of Hershey call-ups in the No. 3 center spot, but having a veteran like Tkachuk to count on might not be a bad thing.
3. Dan Hamhuis, D, Nashville
Contract: $2 million
Skinny: The Predators have lots of young defensemen but could use an infusion up front. Hamhuis has struggled a bit this year but could be better in a new situation.
4. Joe Corvo, D, Carolina/Jordan Leopold, D, Florida
Contract: $2.625 million/$1.75 million
Skinny: Either of these guys could be a nice upgrade and add depth to the Caps' top six, but trading within the division can be tricky.
5. Ilya Kovalchuk, LW, Atlanta
Contract: $6.389 million
Skinny: Caps fans can dream, can't they? He might be the biggest prize on the market at the deadline if the Thrashers can't lock him up, but what if they remain in contention?
