Sarkozy raps the burkha

French President Nicolas Sarkozy says parliament should ban burkhas because they are not a religious symbol but "a sign of subservience" of women, the BBC is reporting.

The burkha "will not be welcome on the territory of the French republic," the French president told parliament, which is considering a ban against the Islamic dress.

Sarkozy said that Islam "must be respected as much as other religions,” but a leading French Muslim has said a ban would stigmatize the religion.

Maybe Sarkozy would like burkhas if they were made by French designers. You know, something by Givenchy or Christian Dior. Tres chic!

If you think Sarkozy was harsh in criticizing the burkha, you should have heard him talk about Amish clothing. Wow! And he's none too keen on Baptist robes.

Somebody should tell Sarkozy that some religions require their followers to dress a certain way as a sign of devotion. I mean, does he really think the pope likes wearing that big hat? Come on.
