Oberto 'very interested in Wizards'

As I blogged last night, the Wizards' top target for a backup center remains Fabricio Oberto, and NBA.com's David Aldridge reported today that the 34-year-old Argentinian is expected to make a decision some time next week regarding his future.

I checked in with Oberto's agent Herb Rudoy just a bit ago, and he said "Fabricio is very interested in the Wizards, because they're going to have a very good team next year, being healthy again. And he wants to win another championship."

Oberto, whom the Wizards would use the bi-annual exception ($1.99 million) to sign, also is being pursued by Phoenix, Rudoy said. And the center and his camp were exploring options of returning to San Antonio, which traded him to Milwaukee, which sent him to Detriot, which then waived him. But, according to San Antonio's WOAI.com the Spurs have reached an agreement to sign Theo Ratliff as a backup center, which likely will significantly diminish chances of an Oberto return.

"We're weighing all our options right now," Rudoy said. "But, the Wizards are close players, and we remain in close contact with Ernie [Grunfeld], who is in Israel right now. But, I expect around the beginning of the week, a decision will be made."
