GOP governor joins revolt against auto bailout

By Jon Ward on Dec. 15, 2008 into POTUS Notes

Gov. Mark Sanford, South Carolina Republican, sent a letter to President Bush on Monday asking him not to use money from the $700 billion economic rescue package to help bail out automakers.

"This would be a very great mistake," Mr. Sanford said in the letter, which was e-mailed to reporters.

Mr. Bush on Friday opened the door to using money from the Troubled Assets Relief Program, a fund established in October by Congress to deal with instabilities in the U.S. banking and lending system.

Mr. Bush said Monday, during a flight from Iraq to Afghanistan, that he had not yet settled on a course of action.

GOP senators, who blocked the bill Thursday using a filibuster, expressed outrage the next day when the president's spokeswoman said he might resort to using TARP funds, and Mr. Sanford echoed their concerns Monday in his letter.

Using TARP money "would open the floodgates to federal monies for every distressed industry across this country -- and there will be many in this economic slowdown," Mr. Sanford said.

"I believe we are at a tipping point in moving from a market-based economy to a politically-based economy, wherein one's successes can be determined not by good decisions and hard work, but by the size of one's voice and connection to Washington."

I love it republicans fighting republicans - thought they couldn't get enough of Pres. Bush - voted him in twice - he's almost ruined our country.

I live in South Carolina and I grew up here. I only stay b/c of my family and friends. This is the worst state in the nation, and only b/c of people like Mark Sanford and the other morons who vote for him. SC has the worst statistics across the board in the US: violent crime, infant mortality, low SAT scores, automobile related deaths, poor infrastructure, uneducated workforce, pretty much anything you can think of. I hope NO ONE listens to ANYTHING Gov. Sanford has to say. Schools in my area are either shutting down or cutting the curriculums b/c he wants to lower taxes for corporations and the wealthy. A special needs school just had to close. Families of these children have no options, no one to help w/ the kids while they work. He's an idiot. He doesn't have the basic intelligence to understand that if in this recession, we add another 2-3 million job losses, including jobs from factories IN SOUTH CAROLINA that make automobile parts (Spartanburg Steel, Goodyear, etc.), it would be devastating.

unityclare - you're an idiot you probably like Blagojevich much better. Look at all the Dems circling in the water, just a bunch of crooks from the most corrupt political party... Freakin left wing libnut! Likely you condone the bailout and a move from free markets to government controlled corruption based markets - It's the Democratic (Party) way. Especially if you're from Illinois or NY like your Messiah, the Daly's, the Kennedy's and Blogo... You go; show the world how you take the moral high road. What a joke.

Actually, thitchco, I'M AGAINST ANY BAILOUT. It's your great right-wing conservative President who is pushing for them and WILL give this one to the auto industry one way or another. Just stay tuned to see it! Also, I recall a quote from Pres. Bush recently saying the vote for BO was "a repudiation against republicans." THAT'S YOU! And, no, I'm not for the Gov. of Illinois. He's a crook like so many of you are.

And thitchco I'm completely disenchanted with the Kennedys, but I'm a SOS Clinton fan. She would have made a great President. Now I call a wrong a wrong when I see it (probably unlike you) - her husband though a great leader did misbehave at the office one day and denied it. But hope is in sight. If we can just move on with BO and his great pics perhaps we can clean up the Bush years, balance the budget, and maybe be blessed with a surplus yet again!
