Palin's 'demons'

By Jon Ward on July 1, 2009 into POTUS Notes

It's the perfect week for a political food fight, as Congress is out and many others in D.C. are on vacation. Jonathan Martin's piece on the squabbling among former McCain campaign hands is sure to drive much of the political conversation for the rest of the week.

But the sniping between Steve Smith, Bill Kristol and Randy Scheunemann started in response to the Vanity Fair piece on Palin, which is "the story of a political novice with an intuitive feel for the temper of her times, a woman who saw her opportunities and coolly seized them," writes Todd Purdum.

Of course, it says much more than that, much of it negative, painting a portrait of Palin as an ignorant, megalomaniacal, vindictive woman, which is what prompted the back-and-forth between Schmidt and Kristol.

But I asked one of the senior McCain campaign officials who worked closest with Palin what he thought of the article, by e-mail last night and then this morning over the phone. He e-mailed back immediately, calling the article "absolutely fascinating" and "completely riveting."

"While the Palin camp is surely marshaling the torches and pitchforks and baying for blood by now, my hope is that somehow -- against the odds -- Palin is able to draw some sort of lesson out of all of this that helps her find a way to exist peacefully in the public space. It can't be easy to spend every day under this kind of withering fire and I know that it is brutal on her family, who are generally good people that never asked for this," the political operative wrote.

"You'd think that at some point, even Palin's formidable armor of self-deception would so loudly clang against reality that she'd be forced to change. I doubt that though. Introspection doesn't seem to be her strong-suit. But people can change. I hope she can too . . . for her sake and for our party's."

When I spoke by phone this morning with the same official, he said the VF article was not "contrived" and that it did, in fact, give an accurate portrayal of Palin.

"It's more sad for me because I think she is a great political talent and could have a future or some sort of role, but she has these demons that she can't shake, and I think it's unfortunate she has this ability to disconnect herself from reality when things go wrong and she has this total lack of introspection," he said.

There is a battle within the Republican Party right now, the operative said, over whether Palin is their future or not.

"I think there are a lot of people who want the party to be able to look past Sarah Palin because if we don't, we're going to be in trouble for a long time," he said.

Someone should start a “what in the hell is wrong with you people award”. This award could be presented to people who should know better but say idiotic things anyway. Take for instance, this article. You should know that if Sarah Palin was not up to being a VP the blame goes to the McCain campaign. Palin as you may have heard was a popular governor from Alaska who was virtually unknown in the lower forty-eight at the time of her selection. The McCain campaign picked her as some kind of Hail- Mary pass to attract the disaffected Clinton voters. The mainstream media, that were by this time enthralled with Obama were scared witless by her convention speech. In a short time the campaign actually moved ahead of Obama. Since then, there has been one attack after another on Palin and her family. The media decided to make her another Dan Quayle. In the face of this vicious onslaught Palin is not supposed to defend herself or her family. If she does, she is being petty. If she doesn’t the charge is “true”. If Palin was not ready to be VP the fault lies with the very people in the McCain campaign who are now trying to lay the blame for their loss at her feet for picking her. The biggest problem is, that no one knows whether she is ready or not because I have yet to see a serious reporter investigate her record. She is apparently too much of a threat to the Obama loving media and the Republican establishment for us ever to ever know the truth.

Here we go again with this unnamed sources bull$hit. Could you fools stop writing articles using unnamed sources to besmirch and destroy people’s character? If they can't say this crap in public and on the record then these McCain people need to STFU. Seriously.

I am sick of all of these "un-named" sources. If certain people have/had issues with Ms. Palin, they need to step up and admit who they are. The Vanity Fair piece hardly included any attributable sources. If you are going to speak up, then step up and identify yourself.

Listen up Democon's! Just because she is running Alaska successfully should not discourage you from believing in unnamed sources. Long live selective logic!!!

Bringing Palin on board was the only good call McCain's misbegotten campaign made. She brought the energy and enthusiasm sorely needed to combat Obama's media machine. She didn't drag McCain down; McCain's incompetent staff dragged Palin down.

Anonymous McCain campaign blade runner: "But people can change. I hope she can too...for her sake and for our party’s." . Should we translate this "But people can change. I hope she can soften her positions on gay marriage and abortion ...for her sake and for our party’s"? . * . Anonymous McCain campaign blade runner: "but she has these demons that she can't shake " . Should we translate this: "hire us. Just look at the job we are doing demonizing this Republican chick"! . * . Anonymous McCain campaign blade runner: "I think its' unfortunate she has this ability to disconnect herself from reality when things go wrong and she has this total lack of introspection," . Should should we translate this: "when is this Palin chick going to figure out that she's the fall guy and there is nothing that we are going to let her do about it"? . * . I don't know but it would be nice to get connect the names of the anonymous sources on Team-Smith to step up to the plate with attributed quotes so that Gov. Palin can defend herself.

tjh2545 is exactly right. The media had successfully crucified Hillary, continally attacked any threat to their Chosen One, and then this beatiful and successful young Alaskan Governor came on the scene. They foamed at the mouth! They attacked her frantically. And now that their totally unprepared President is going down in the polls, propagandists like Mr. Ward need to use Sarah as a diversion from the amateur job Obama is doing.

Palin is doing a "begathon" for $600,000 to pay "the legal expenses for "all those frivolous ethics complaints" The state only has less than $300,000 total . Other than her own troopergate complaint bill of $200,00, the state total comes to 100,000, while Palin and her staff said that it cost the state MILLIONS! ================================================================== Juneau Empire Alaska has spent nearly $300,000 investigating ethics complaints against Gov. Sarah Palin, who calls the complaints "harassment" against her and expensive for the state to defend. Palin has accused bloggers and political opponents of bringing "frivolous" ethics charges against her. "How much will this blogger"s asinine political grandstanding cost all of us in time and money?" Palin asked after the state Personnel Board dismissed another complaint last spring. Palin herself may be responsible for much of those costs, as indicated by a list of investigation costs for 13 separate cases the state Personnel Board released Tuesday in response to public records requests. The minimalist list identifies cases only by the year and a three-digit case number. State Personnel Director Nicki Neal ........refused ........to identify them more specifically, so connections between known investigations and the costs released could not be verified. However, the timing, scope and other factors of the single largest expense appear to fit the case Palin filed against herself that cost $187,797 to investigate. That"s almost two-thirds of the total $296,042 of all Personnel Board investigations in the last two years. http://juneauempire.com/stories/070109/sta_457304159.shtml

This Vanity Fair piece on Palin is the most ridiculous hit piece because it is just a regurgitated recycle job of the same mud from previous stories and is relying on anonymous sources. Give me a name of your sources, and we can debate. Hide behind the anonymous shield and there is nothing to say, other than "Get lost". Real Clear Politics has a first class analysis of yet another MSM attempt to take down Sarah and concludes that this sort of rabid attack will only enhance her appeal outside of the elitist beltway http://realclearpolitics.blogs.time.com/2009/06/30/purdums-hit-on-palin/ What I find interesting is that these Rino's are enlisting the help of the MSM to advance their Palin-bashing! The ethics complaints against Governor Palin had nothing whatsoever to do with ethics - that's why all 15 of them were dismissed. They are about petty politics. They were filed by people who have no sense of ethics or decency themselves..

Agnus: That article is disingenuous... The Alaska Trust Fund is to raise money for her staff's legal fees as well, not just hers. She is not the only one having to defend herself against outrageously ridiculous ethics complaints.

bpdavidson

Oh, another thing Anus... SHE is not the one doing the "begathon" A third party group, conservative4palin.com ran a webathon to raise money for her. That website is in no way affiliated with Governor Palin.

STOP PUBLISHING COMMENTS FROM ANONYMOUS MCCAIN STAFFERS. Make them stand behind their comments, or don't publish them at all. And I can assure you that most McCain staffers were excited by Palin, even if a few idiots at the top were not (i.e., the idiots who didn't know how to run a presidential campaign even halfway decently).
