The Redskins were already down to the 75-man roster limit for this week, but with Jason Goode still bothered by turf toe, they placed the former Maryland tight end on the waived/injured list and re-signed linebacker Danny Verdun-Wheeler, who finished last year on the practice squad and had been cut earlier this month.
Goode's final NFL play, if he never resurfaces, was a highlight for any long shot. He had the 33-yard touchdown catch with just 69 seconds left that beat the Jets on Aug. 16 in Brett Favre's New York debut. With veterans Chris Cooley and Todd Yoder and second-round pick Fred Davis ahead of him, Goode wasn't going to make the team even if healthy. The practice squad is still a possibility.
Verdun-Wheeler has little chance of sticking unless he has a huge game in Thursday's preseason finale against Jacksonville, but he joins the mix for a possible sixth and final linebacker spot behind starters Marcus Washington, London Fletcher and Rocky McIntosh, special teams ace Khary Campbell and 2007 draft pcik H.B. Blades. Competing with Verdun-Wheeler are former Saint and Lion ALfred Fincher -- who has a bad hamstring -- ex-Terp David Holloway -- who arrived just last week -- and rookie free agent Curtis Gatewood.
All this means that if the Redskins keep six linebackers, No. 6 could be on someone's else roster right now.
